    Refuges
Inside the tunnel there are a number of doorways that have been bricked up, at first we thought the doorways would have origonaly been used as escape routes and probably would have had tunnels behind them.
Since building this website and due to the knowledge of the general public who have written in the guestbook, we have learned that they were called refuges and were used to stand inside to avoid passing trains. They refuges were usually 2 - 3 feet deep and wide enough for two people to take refuge until the train had passed.
When the tunnel was re-opened as a cycle path the refuges were bricked up to stop people lurking around inside them.
